Yesterday, Hadley and I took a field trip to the Retina Foundation. We got $5 to cover our traveling expenses! Anyway, we filled out the standard paperwork then they took us back and did a couple tests with her. Luckily she took a good morning nap and another in the car on the way and drank most of her bottle in the waiting room while I filled out papers, so she was in an alert happy mood!
She did great! First they held up big flash cards/boards with black & while lines on one side only. The doctor would flash them up not knowing which side the lines were on and would watch her eyes to see if she was finding them. They got harder and harder and she started to get bored, but they said she was very consistent.
Then they put four electrodes on her head and had her watch a computer monitor. I am not sure what was on the screen, because I was busy holding her hands to keep her from pulling off the electrodes and watching her head/face to see that she was facing and looking at the monitor. She was on my lap for all the tests. Basically, the electrodes would record her reactions.
After those two they told me she charted at 20/80 was is in the normal or average range for a child her age (as a preemie adjusted age or actual 10 month age). YEAH! We know she can see, but it was good to have them tell me.
Last but no least we went into another room and they put some goggles on her head and flashed some cartoon characters on the large screen. They didn't need her to watch for long, but she got a little fidgety with this one. The doctor then put a pen with a big yellow happy face on top in front of her. She focused on it long enough for them to get what the needed.
We were there just a bit over an hour. Sean when across the street to hang out at Jessica's with Andrew. So, he also got to go somewhere - just not as far. He has fun following Andrew around as he was over at our house last Monday! But, we left our KU plush basketball over there, so we need to go back over and get it!
Hadley will go back in March for the same set of tests. Pat and I both think that her movement has slowed down. She also does not tip or cock her head as much. Hopefully these are good signs that her eyes are getting stronger and will grow out of this soon! Thanks for your prayers.
